At Whisper Audiology, we love learning about all things hearing and sometimes, our patients become the teachers!
Recently, one of our young patients, Lylah came in for her appointment and shared something amazing. She’s a proud Girl Scout, and her troop had been learning all about owls and their incredible hearing abilities. Lylah was so excited to tell me everything she knew and I have to admit, she taught me a few new facts too!
Did you know that an owl’s ears aren’t actually where you think they are? Those little “tufts” on their heads aren’t ears at all – just feathers! Their real ears are hidden on the sides of their head, and they’re actually uneven in height. That small difference helps owls figure out exactly where a sound is coming from even in total darkness.
Their round faces act like built-in sound funnels, directing even the faintest rustle of a mouse straight toward their ears. It’s one of nature’s most brilliant designs for hearing precision.
Owls rely on their hearing to navigate, hunt, and survive and in a way, we humans do too. Hearing keeps us connected to our world, our loved ones, and the moments that matter most.
So, thank you, Lylah, for reminding us that hearing is a true superpower whether you’re a person or an owl! 🦉
If you’ve noticed you’re missing out on sounds in your own life, come visit us at Whisper Audiology, we’re always here to help you listen, learn, and hear your world more clearly.
